We joined forces with Anthony Kolber, John McLennan and the team from Right Angle Studio to redesign and rebuild The Thousands. An online magazine covering the ’000 postcodes around Australia — Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney — The Thousands has been publishing since 2005 and has, er, thousands of loyal readers across the country.
Our role was building a custom publishing system to replace their legacy WordPress install, including migrating the complex data and assets from the previous incarnation of the site.
A modern Rails 3 app, the publishing system allows the team of publishers and editors at The Thousands to administer all aspects of the site through a simple, beautiful, and straightforward interface. The site runs on Heroku’s cloud application platform — allowing us to easily handle spikes in traffic — and leverages Amazon S3 and the CloudFront CDN for super-fast image and asset loading.
